WELLNESS RETREAT - KENSHŌ

In collaboration with EFP Planungs GmbH, a unique concept was developed for the wellness area of the Reiters Supreme in Burgenland, blending Japanese philosophy with modern design. Kenshō, a term from Zen tradition, describes the realization of the true nature of the self – a profound experience of calm, balance, and mindfulness. While daily life is often shaped by goals and expectations, Kenshō offers a retreat where humans and nature come together in perfect harmony. Natural materials, soft lighting, and a minimalist design language create an atmosphere of silence and regeneration.

This space offers more than just relaxation; it provides a complete experience – a mindful escape from the daily life, designed to restore balance to body, mind, and soul. The rooms of Kenshō offer the opportunity to reconnect with oneself, a place where nature and the self are in harmony. It is a space of well-being, tranquility, and harmony.

The guiding design language of the new building was inspired by the Chinese Yin Yang symbol, which represents the philosophy of opposing forces. "The Way of Yin and Yang." This principle is also reflected in Japanese culture under the term "Inyo," which refers to the rising and setting sun. It symbolizes the fusion of two different elements or energies (positive/negative) that cannot exist without each other. Kenshō is an interplay of the five elements of the Japanese Godai: Fire, Water, Sky, Earth, and Wind.

⽕ Fire: The sauna reaches temperatures of up to 120°C.
空 Sky: The Onsen offers relaxation and unwinding with an open view into the distance.
⽔ Water: Visible, audible, and tangible throughout the building – calming both body and mind.
地 Earth: Japanese vegetation, such as bonsais, creates a deep connection with nature.
⾵ Wind: Wooden columns channel the wind and provide protection, accompanied by wind chimes.

A harmonious interplay of architecture, space, and nature creates an environment that invites reflection, remembrance, and experience. Through fluid transitions, dynamic spatial flow, and the deliberate use of light and natural materials, a multisensory experience is created that seamlessly integrates design and landscape. This architectural design promotes deep tranquility and clarity by slowing down the mind and integrating nature into the living space.

The design approach harmoniously connects the building with the topography, while it seemingly floats above the landscape and water. Wood and glass create a seamless integration with nature – wood conveys warmth and well-being, while glass blends interior and exterior spaces. The Japanese term Inyo, inspired by the rising and setting sun, shapes the sauna, which is connected to the relaxation area via a narrow path and offers breathtaking views, especially in the evening.
